Just wanted to second everything you said and add a reminder to people that the e-mail message accompanying their resume usually gets printed out and attached to the resume; and then it's viewed by all the people who are part of the interview process. So in effect, it gets compared to snail mail cover letters also in the pile of potentials. People sometimes forget that their e-mail message can play an important ongoing role in helping them stand out from the crowd!
